Easy as XYZ
Well, after weeks and weeks of admonitions from my buttinsky neighbors, I finally went ahead and did it. I bought and installed a Genie garage door opener.
I heard it from them pretty much every day. We’d run into each other at the mailbox, and in a conspiratorial whisper, they’d say “your garage door’s open.” I always pretended I was glad for the update, but really, so what if it was? A man’s home is his castle, of which he is king, and the positioning of the drawbridge is the king’s prerogative. I suppose they were worried about my attracting lawnmower thieves to the neighborhood.
Weird thing was, though, I’d go around the side of the house to check, and probably half the time it was closed. Whatever.
It was finally too much when I started getting little notes on the front door: “Just FYI, your garage door was open all day today.” Really, what’s it to them? Who are they, the unofficial homeowners’ association? I guess they meant well, but it was still kind of annoying. And, like I said, about half the time, it wasn’t. Or maybe they closed it for me before I got home, who knows? They probably thought they were doing me a favor, but frankly I’d feel better knowing they stayed on their side of the pickets.
Anyway, that whole chapter is behind me now, because I got one of those ultra-quiet belt-drive Genie openers. Oh, it’s nice. The belt is fiber-reinforced for extra quietness, so I can come home late without waking anyone up at my house or the neighbors’, even though the garage faces their bedroom directly.
Plus it’s protected by an Intellicode rolling security code, so that’ll keep the neighbors all up out my biz-natch fo shizzle. That’s peace of mind.
Yep, that new Genie should put a stop to the neighbors’ passive-aggressive garage-door notes! Here’s something weird, though. At work, I’ve started getting anonymous emails advising me that I’ve “left [my] barn door open,” and expressing concern about the horse’s possible escape.
Now, I don’t even keep livestock, so I don’t know what that’s about.
