A police officer's account of the altercation that resulted in Alabama sophomore linebacker Courtney Upshaw's arrest Wednesday night on a misdemeanor domestic violence/harassment charge differs from the account relayed by the father of the girl involved.
Kendall Grzyb, a UA student from Madison, Ala., was arrested last night alongside Courtney Upshaw. Both were charged with misdemeanor domestic violence.
Upshaw and Kendall Grzyb, both 19-year-old UA students, were arrested for an incident that police say occurred around 9:22 p.m. in the parking lot of the Student Recreation Center on campus.
Sgt. Rusty Romine of the University of Alabama Police Department reported in court documents obtained by the Press-Register that he saw Upshaw chase down Grzyb and he then "grabbed (Kendall) Grzyb by the back of the neck and hair with his right hand and pushed her downward in what appeared to be an attempt to push her to the ground."
Romine's account goes on to say that Grzyb freed herself and "attempted to strike Upshaw about his face, however she was unable to make contact. Upshaw then grasped Grzyb's right arm by the forearm, released and then pushed Grzyb away."
At that time, Romine said he separated the two and Upshaw told him that Grzyb slapped him and walked away after seeing him talking to another female. The documents say Grzyb told Romine that "Upshaw followed her, grabbed her by the back of the neck and pusher her."
Romine reported that Grzyb told him the two had been involved in a dating relationship during the past three months.
Both Upshaw and Grzyb were taken into custody and held in Tuscaloosa County Jail, held for a mandatory 12-hour period on $500 bond and released this morning. Upshaw was booked into jail at 1:25 a.m.
After speaking with his daughter upon her release, Kendall's father Dave Grzyb told the Press-Register that it was a "simple lovers' quarrel altercation," and that "I honestly think it was probably initiated by my daughter. I don't think he laid a hand on her. He just tried to restraint her to keep from getting hit again."
Dave Grzyb said that neither his daughter nor Upshaw are pressing charges in the matter.
