Weekend preview: The real world South Florida
CJ Koegel, left, the randy heartthrob from MTV's The Real World: Cancun hosts the party Friday at Pangaea at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. CJ, of course, is the 24-year-old Boca dude who, when he's not in the middle of some spat between Joey and Ayiiia, is looking to hook on with a NFL team as a punter. At least he'd lead the league in great hair. At the Pangaea party, ladies get free Belvedere before midnight and Tom Laroc spins. Info: 954-581-5454.
Some Palm Beach flavor
September's second annual Flavor Palm Beach restaurant month gets a kick off with a Clematis Street blowout Friday night from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Centennial Square. The party, which benefits the American Red Cross, will include tastings from some of the participating Flavor restaurants, entertainment and more. Advance tickets are $15, with admission $20 at the door. Info: 561-366-1000.
Goat's blood
Really? Do you really want to watch Rob Zombie's blood-soaked treatment of Halloween 2 Thursday night at the Sunrise Cinemas at Las Olas Riverfront with 93 Rock's deranged Goat? Really? Yes, there are drinks and games and prizes ... OK, here are the details we discussed earlier in the week. You've been warned.
Icy hot
Watch the final round of judging for the 2009-2010 Florida Panthers cheerleader squad, now christened the Bova Panthers Ice Dancers, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Broward Mall, 8800 W. Broward Blvd. in Plantation. It's free. Info: 954-765 -1329.
Such a Von Teese
Yes. Thursday night's Cointreauversial event at the uncompromisingly swank Setai is designed to celebrate the new cocktail of the same name created by burlesque goddess Dita Von Teese, right. Luminous. It's a seductive blend of Cointreau, creme de violette and edible violets. Dreamy. They're free from 9 to 10 p.m. Sweet. And there will be sultry sounds from DJ James Dolby and a burlesque show. OK. But imagine my disappointment to learn that Dita is otherwise engaged Thursday night. No Dita. Imagine. The Setai is at 2001 Collins. Info: 305-520-6400.
Remember the times
Saturday would have been Michael Jackson's 51st birthday, and there are many among us in the mood to remember. At 12:01 a.m., Hot 105 FM will go all-Michael all day and that night is hosting a party at Karu & Y in downtown Miami, with a celebration of the music, a best-dressed contest (circa Off the Wall and later), best dance moves and other events. Winners get cash and other prizes. Advance tickets are $15, $20 at the door. More info: 305-567-5708.
On Thursday a Michael Jackson tribute will be the centerpiece of the free Clematis by Night event in downtown West Palm Beach. Soul singer Tony Wilson, who has received attention for his Michael-like moves, will lead the tribute from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Info: 561-822-1515.
Dance with the stars
Many people remember Edyta Sliwinska for being able to move around Dolphin great Jason Taylor on Dancing With the Stars with more fearless athleticism than many NFL quarterbacks (except Rex Grossman, who once did a mean tango with Taylor, left).
On Saturday Sliwinska and fellow DWTS star Alec Mazo will host a daylong series of workshops at Coconut Creek's Goldcoast Ballroom, 1415 Lyons Road. There will be four 45-minute workshops on the cha-cha, rumba, samba and jive. Cost is $20 each, or $65 for all four.
There will also be time set aside for questions, photographs, open dance and a performance by the pros. The open dance and performance is $40. Private lessons also are available. Reservations are required and can be made at 954-979-0770.
Hmmmm... beer
Football and free beer. Poetry. Beginning Sept. 5, your neighborhood Quarterdeck will give you a free 60-ounce pitcher of beer when you and a buddy each order a meal. The deal is good on Bud, Bud Light and Bud Select from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and all day Sunday through Jan. 3.
Drink your Vitamin C!
4 Orange Premium Vodka, which claims to be the only vodka distilled from Florida oranges, is looking for a few good women during an open casting call Thursday night at Il Bacio Restaurant & Lounge in Delray Beach.
Specifically the company is looking for "sophisticated" promotional models, which they call "Grove Stand Girls," to serve as brand ambassadors at various events around South Florida. Yes, there is a pay check involved.
The casting call runs from 7 to 10 p.m. Be prepared to have your photo taken and to provide scouts with your measurements, including the size of your ... feet.
Cocktails and refreshments will be provided. Everyone 21 and older, including non-applicants, are welcome.
